RECONSTRUCTION:THE DOCTOR WHO PROJECT II

RESTORED FOOTAGE

DO YOU HAVE MISSING FOOTAGE?

If you have now discovered to be in private possession of a piece of missing footage; no matter how small, the BBC would be interested in hearing from you. Although the BBC do not spend vast amounts of money actively searching for lost footage, the Archives are more than happy to have anything "lost" returned.

The list on the previous page is the most current at the time of writing, and thus any material on this list is considered a welcome light, should it be available.

If you discover any such material, you can either contact myself, Gareth Parker at garethparker2000@yahoo.co.uk, or contact Steve Roberts, who works for the BBC Doctor Who Restoration Team (a link to their page can be found under the Links Section).

Many fans would be grateful to see the return of this footage, and I hope you may be able to help.

But, if not, there maybe a third way...

Utilising computers, some of the footage from the Jon Pertwee days, although complete, existed only in Black and White footage instead of colour. However, there were some "off-air" recorded copies of these adventures in colour, from betamax tape, overlaying them with the 16mm Black and White film.

In 1985, it was suggested that it could be possible to mix the two formats, but it wasn't until 1992, that the idea became reality, and the classic serial, "The Daemons" was first for the treatment.

A lot of this work has been acheived by the brillant work and sacrifice of time by the Doctor Who Restoration team, who's efforts and radical thinking has lead to the recolouring of Pertwee serials, and the rebuilding of low-quality copies of classic stories. After The Daemons, they set to work on "The Silurians", Pertwee's second adventure and then "Terror Of the Autons". However, the Team still require taped off-air colour copies of certain adventures:

"The Ambassadors of Death"
` "The Mind of Evil"
"Planet of the Daleks" Episode 3
"Invasion of the Dinosaurs" Episode 1
Note: After the loss of Episode One of "Invasion of the Dinosaurs", the BBC sold this serial to foreign countries (notably America) in five parts, retitling Part Two "Part One", Part Three "Part Two", and so on. Steve Roberts emailed me to let me know that they get lots of letters offering them "Part One" of this story from the American broadcasts, which is in fact Part Two.
The Restoration Team is interested in finding a UK Broadcast colour copy of the genuine Part One, which should actually be entitled just "The Invasion", as the Producers wanted to keep the Dinosaur element a surprise!

This excellent first stage in using computers is a pointer to the potential they present; as the technology advances it theory behind the Project becomes more achievable. In 1986, someone had the idea of using two formats to recolour four episodes. It took them nearly a decade to see it realised. Now, the Project gives a new idea life.
